Isle of Dogs parks to be hired out for corporate events

Tower Hamlets Council faces criticism over proposals to actively encourage companies and individuals to hire out public parks on the Isle of Dogs for private events.

Millwall Park, Sir John McDougal Gardens, Island Gardens and St John's Park have all been earmarked for hire for events such as corporate sports days and weddings to boost Council coffers.

The plans were due to be debated by the full Council last Wednesday, but time limits meant the motion was delayed.

It hasn't stopped an application has already been lodged by One Housing Group to use Millwall Park on September 18, featuring live music and dancing between noon and 6pm. Local residents, including Claire Walker, are concerned it will mean they are excluded from using the park.

She said: "My son plays football in the park on Saturdays and Sundays, so what will happen on September 18?

"A lot of sports teams use the park at weekends, so what will they do? If they do it this one time, what will happen in future? They'll spend time setting up the event, so the park could be out of action all weekend, and what will it do to the grass?

"We've had no consultation about this. The first I knew about it was when a neighbour told me. There are some small notices on some of the gates, but no other information. It's just not on. The people who live here should be able to use the park when they want to."

The Council said plans to hire out the parks are yet to be finalised, and will be subject to strict planning and licensing regulations. It declined to say how much parks will cost to hire.

A spokeswoman said: "We are currently reviewing the suitability of our parks and open spaces to determine what activity would work best at each location. This would depend on size of site, transport links, access, desirability and other factors.

"We will not necessarily promote activities in all parks, and active marketing will not start until we have agreed on the above.

"The parks will always remain accessible for community use. We will not agree an activity that takes up a disproportionate park area. The council already enables these types of events and has done so for a number of years.

"A report to Cabinet requested approval for more proactive marketing of parks and open spaces for small and corporate events and this was agreed.

"When accepting bookings we will ensure, wherever possible, that the event does not impact on planned sporting arrangements. On occasion it may be necessary to relocate a match but this already occurs from time to time.
