Open for Business: Herself Moms
A 200-RYT Certified Yoga Instructor Certified Childbirth Educator, Hurst started the Herself family five years ago with a Yoga studio in Midtown Sacramento.“I was teaching prenatal Yoga at Sutter’s pregnant gym and working as a Childbirth Educator creating and developing the program at Sutter when we lost funding and those resources were lost due to budget cuts,” Hurst said. “There was and still is such a huge need for those resources in the community, and decided to branch out on my own.” “The class schedule is set up to work around all moms’ schedules whether she’s stay at home or back to work,” Hurst said.
Informational and pre-natal yoga classes are held in the early evenings while the postpartum sculpt classes are held late mornings and are designed for moms on leave who want to get in shape before heading back to work. “Pregnancy and early parenthood is an overwhelming time that for first timers is like traveling uncharted territory,” Mach said. “You may not feel like you can call your doctor 24 hours a day, or may feel like your concerns are irrational or unimportant, but here there’s a network of professionals and other moms who have heard it all before and understand what you’re going through.” [["validates_presence_of",{"message":"Please enter your email address."}],["validates_length_of",{"too_long":"Your email address must contain between 5 and 100 characters.","maximum":100,"allow_nil":true}],["validates_email_format_of",{"message":"Your email address is not properly formatted. When to Start Solids - Introducing baby to solid foods
When to start solids and when to introduce your baby solid foods sound like simple questions, but it can get complicated depending on who you ask, whether you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, working outside the home or at home, etc.
After reading countless of articles on this topic, I decided that I should wait at least until 7 months to introduce any foods to my son. At 7 months he refused the solid food I tried to feed him (I think it was yam), so we decided to wait a little longer. He was exclusively breastfed until 9 months, at which point we discovered that he had iron deficiency anemia. We panicked and started trying more solids. Long story short, he is almost 2 years old now, healthy, and only recently started enjoying solid foods.
So here is what I learned and my advice:
- Don’t start too early : Baby’s digestive system doesn’t develop completely until about 7 months. Start around 6-7 months mark as doctors suggest these days. Some doctors suggest starting at 4 months with cereal, but I wouldn’t, since babies can’t even sit up then.
- Don’t start too late : If you start too late, your baby will be accustomed to the taste of milk or formula and will prefer those to solid foods. Also, if you are breastfeeding your baby’s iron reserves will start to diminish after around 6 months, so there is a risk of developing iron deficiency anemia. This is especially true if your child was born early.
- Offer solids after milk until about 9 months . Breastmilk or formula (or combination) should be your child’s main source of nutrition until about 12 months. Offer solids to get them used to the idea, not as the main nutrition.
- Avoid these foods during the first year : Honey, which can cause botulism in infants, and strawberries, nuts, and eggs, which are common allergens.
