Support Liberty's home of relief for the needy among us Spirit of Sharing ...

In 2011 there are more people who need direct help or indirect assistance than in 1982. Indirect assistance is given to countless of people when they shop at the SOS Thrift Store; shopping there helps the working poor stretch their paychecks.

The Vindicator is sponsoring a fundraiser for SOS this Sat., July 9 to pay for the new air conditioning system and to resume electrical bill assistance for their clients this summer.

In 1982 the compassionate citizens and church congregations of South Liberty County started a better way and a new Christian work "dedicated to the proposition that all citizens should have a right to the necessities and quality of life: food, clothing, shelter, health and the pursuit happiness."

This was the birth of the Spirit of Sharing, Inc. Today it has volunteers, part-time paid workers, and support from thirty-one churches.

Formed to take some of the burden off local pastors who are continually bombarded by people in need, Spirit of Sharing is one central, local location where pastors can send people to get help.

The thirty-one churches are official members of the organization and the churches provide financial and volunteer support. Other social organizations such as the Liberty Lion's Club have financially supported SOS for over twenty-nine years. Countless individuals have made donations to the thrift store and volunteered their time to make SOS one of most successful efforts in Liberty County.

In 1982 twelve churches started SOS in a small building at 317 Crockett St. with a few volunteers such as Christa Simonson, president of SOS, vice-president Joe Regen, center co-directors Mineta Robichaux and Evelyn Shauberger, treasurer Sue Rozelle, and secretary Allan Skip Dees. Jo Ann Ford, Winnie Abshier, Billie Eakin, Denise Barkis, Eliza Mae Guidry, Reverend Anton Kern, Laurie Elliott, Lois Watts, Jake Smyth, Bonnie Ward, Dorothy Manning, Dime Manning, Evelyn Coleman, David Manning, Rosa Clark and Roslyn Landry were valuable volunteers in the early days.

In 2010 Spirit of Sharing helped 4,669 individuals and 1,880 of those were children. So far in 2011, 4200 individuals have been assisted and the need continues to grow.

Since December 1982 the Spirit of Sharing's Christmas project, Operation Noel has provided bags of groceries, toys, fruit, candy, stockings, clothes, blankets, towel sets, heaters and money for groceries to over 8,500 families and another 2,000 senior citizens.
