Tinicum Arts Festival

Former Bucks County resident June Prince doesn’t miss a chance to check out the Tinicum Arts Festival.

She’s been coming for the past five years.

This year’s trip proved to be a fruitful one, as Prince emerged from the festival at Tinicum Park on Saturday with a painting and miniature basket to add to her growing collection.

“I wanted to buy gifts, but I bought for myself,” she said with a laugh.

Prince and her husband, David, who now live in Pittstown, N.J., say the Tinicum Arts Festival is a cut above similar events.

“It is original art, not just crafts,” she said.

Now in its 62nd year, the festival has grown in leaps and bounds, attracting thousands of people to the grounds along the Delaware River in Upper Bucks.

The two-day festival, which concludes today, is run by volunteers with the Tinicum Civic Association. Proceeds from the festival support dozens of nonprofit organizations in the community and help the association maintain nearby Stover Mill, built in 1832.

Since 2000, the Tinicum Civic Association has donated $300,000 in festival profits to area groups.

“It has really expanded,” said Doug Sardo, co-chairman of the festival, who estimates the event has grown 50 percent in the past decade.

This year’s festival features 138 crafters, with 175 different artists represented. Some vendors traveled from New Hampshire and Connecticut to participate.

Sarah Geuss had a shorter trip, coming south from Easton to sell her wine bottle lanterns. Geuss collects empty wine bottles from restaurants, removes the bottoms, and inserts candles to create tabletop or hanging lanterns.

“There are so many restaurants that don’t recycle. All of this stuff would have been in a landfill,” she said.

Scores of tents are set up on the grounds, with vendors selling everything from paintings of Bucks County scenery to hand-crafted jewelry to hand-carved birdhouses.

The festival also features rummage and used book sales, as well as musical and live act performances.

“It’s the nicest setting and you can stay in the shade,” said Cheryl Stanker of Lower Makefield, who was browsing with fellow Lower Makefield resident Madelyn Baker.

The women have been coming to the festival every year for a decade.

The festival grounds were a bit soft after Friday’s thunderstorms. The association got some help from friends who brought over bales of hay to cover some of the wetter and muddier spots.
