“Consumers may be tempted to shoot just about everything with their smart phone cameras, given their capabilities and convenience,” said Terry Sullivan, associate electronics editor for Consumer Reports. “However, our tests showed that even the models that produced very good images, can not substitute for the image quality and shooting versatility of a dedicated, stand-alone device.” Smart phone cameras have come a long way as manufacturers have upgraded many devices’ capabilities by borrowing sensors, other technologies, and software from basic cameras, producing better displays and image quality than in earlier phones and adding features such as auto-focus and face detection. Users can download apps that allow them to edit photos on the spot. Some smart phones also boast 8-megapixel photo resolution and 1080p HD-resolution video and some models’ touch screen controls are far more intuitive than the buttons and menus most cameras use. Sony Alpha a230 Digital SLR camera?

I recently bought a Sony Alpha Digital SLR camera. Since it came with a standard lens, i was wondering if its possible to buy a non Sony zoom lens off of Craigslist and still have it function correctly. Here's a link to the camera:

it does come with a lens but i need a zoom lens to shoot more landscape pictures

The Sony A230 has a lens mount call the "A" mount (also known as the MA or MAF mount).

The A mount has been used on every Sony and Minolta (and Konica-Minolta) Auto-Focus SLR and dSLR since the mid-1980s. Every old Minolta Auto-Focus lens will work on your Sony A230. There are also many A mount lenses manufactured by Sigma and Tamron.

Avoid the very old MD and MC mount lenses, these go back to the early 1980s and older, they will not work on your Sony without adapters.

You may be asking why Sony uses the Minolta A mount. They took over the dSLR part of Konica-Minolta several years ago and carried on the development of the cameras and lenses under the Sony brand. The first Sony branded dSLR was the Sony A100.

So as long as the lens is an A mount and has been tested on any Sony dSLR it will be fine.

One question though, what’s wrong with the 18-55mm? The 18mm end of the 18-55mm that you have is a good starter for landscapes. If you do decide that you need something wider then I can recommend the Sigma 10-20mm, but it is costly. If you have a lot of money, then the new Sigma 8-16mm is great, but the 10-20mm is a lot cheaper!
