Comedian Steve Martin Eagle-bound

EAGLE — Let’s get one notion out of the way right off the bat. Despite his reputation as one of the funniest men on Earth, Steve Martin is dead serious about his music.

Martin is one of the most diverse individuals you will ever meet. He has gained much-deserved fame as a movie actor, comedian, author, playwright, producer, art aficionado and musician. On Saturday, Martin returns to Idaho with the Steep Canyon Rangers and their self-proclaimed “high class bluegrass” for a live performance at the Eagle River Pavilion.

Launched by appearances on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” Martin gained fame for his hilarious hosting of “Saturday Night Live.” He won Grammy Awards for two comedy albums: “Let’s Get Small” and “A Wild and Crazy Guy.” He also won a Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumentalist in 2003 for playing on Earl Scrugg’s 75th anniversary album.

His film credits range from “Rosanne” to “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” and include “The Three Amigos,” where he co-starred with Martin Short and Chevy Chase, to “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “The Jerk” and “It’s Complicated.” Martin earned critical acclaim for his riveting performance in the 1997 thriller “The Spanish Prisoner” and is widely recognized for his leading role in “Father of the Bride” and its sequel. He can be seen this October in a new comedy “The Big Year” with Owen Wilson and Jack Black.

Martin co-hosted the 2010 Academy Awards and has published a number of books including a hilarious children’s book about going back to school. He and the Steep Canyon Rangers have been touring this summer in support of their new album “Rare Bird Alert,” that includes a live recording of the bluegrass take on Martin’s iconic song “King Tut.” It also includes 12 other Martin-penned songs including “Jubilation Day” and “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs.”

We had a chance to talk with Martin recently to ask about Saturday’s concert, his passion for the banjo and more.

IPT – Talk about the differences between your first album, “The Crow,” with the Steep Canyon Rangers and “Rare Bird Alert.”

MARTIN – “‘The Crow’ were songs I had. Once it came out and was received well, I felt a little more relaxed. And, I guess it’s true that you know when you’re a little more relaxed maybe what’s more natural to you comes out easier.

I can’t speak about the school. I live in Anchorage. It’s our biggest city and it’s just like any other big city in the Lower 48; box stores, chain restaurants, too many people, too much traffic, etc. Yes, there is plenty to see, enjoy, and participate in. There are always festivals and events going on.we’ve concerts, sports events, and plenty of exploring opportunities. You’ll find stuff to do no matter if you’re an indoor or outdoor kind of person. The scenery is spectacular, the air is fresh, and the water is clean. Welcome to Alaska!

As a school psychologist, I’m always searching for excellent materials to share with students, parents and teachers. Help4ADD@High School addresses this important need. The font is easy to read and the format is organized and clear so that students with learning and attentional problems are engaged immediately. Issues relating to study skills, homework, social problems and medication are discussed so that students understand how to self advocate and make intelligent choices for the future. I strongly recommend this blog for students, teachers, psychologists, educational therapists, administrators, and parents.

Excellent, thoughtful, easy to read blog that can help anyone, not just high schoolers, become interested and interesting. I am not the target audience for this blog. I am 7 years removed from high school and three months away from finishing law school. I can tell you the strategies espoused by Cal actually work because I unwittingly stumbled onto many of them during my own high school career, which enabled me to get into a pretty great university with almost no work. Still, this blog provided me with more valuable techniques that I have applied to law school to stay near the top of my class by putting in far less work than other students. I only wish I had found this blog sooner. Beyond school, the techniques Cal presents can be used by anyone, of any age, to become not only successful, but interesting. Cal presents each of his tips, tricks, systems, techniques and strategies in very simple, very easy to understand terms. He then provides examples of how each worked for a few particular students, just so you do not think his ideas are too crazy. If you are a parent, you owe it to your kid to buy this blog, read it, and then make the kid read it. Any half-literate 8th grader can read and comprehend this blog in under a week, and if he applies any of it, it’ll change his life.
