Macalintal: PNoy should stop those sexy ads
MANILA, Philippines - If he was able to stop the use of wang-wangs (sirens) in the streets of Manila and all over the country, President Benigno Aquino III can also stop the proliferation of sexy advertisements and billboards.
In an interview with ABS-CBN’s Punto por Punto, lawyer Romulo Macalintal said “the advertisers and the government are not doing their job. Good thing the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is there.”
Last week, Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos asked advertisers to take down "inappropriate" billboards of the Philippine Volcanoes, the country's rugby team, along EDSA-Guadalupe. The billboards feature members of the team showing off their well sculpted bodies as they posed in colored underwear.
The move caused some people to criticize the mayor and the MMDA for applying a double standard on what type of billboards are deemed appropriate.
Macalintal said this is not the first time that the advertising world’s attention has been called on such matters. No less than his then 15-year-old son and nephews reacted to a humongous billboard last year of a man clad only in his briefs.
“Even they were reacting why we now have such kinds of advertising,” he said. Macalintal, a graduate of advertising, said the sexy ads affect morality issues.
“If the government does not know those are obscene materials, then they are not worthy of being called a government,” he said.
If Aquino can stop those obscene ads, “I’m sure his ratings will shoot up,” Macalintal added.
Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines (OAAP) President Ed Acosta reiterated anew he does not see anything wrong in those billboard ads.
He said those billboards in question went through a rigid screening. Nonetheless, the group is always in touch with the government, ready to pull out ads that are deemed inappropriate.
Acosta said the industry is holding to its chest its right to free expression.
Macalintal answered, “freedom of expression will not be violated if we are already talking about morality issues.”
He said Acosta is lying, for the sake of his job, if he thinks there is nothing wrong in the billboards in question.
Atty. Mac, everyone knows that you are allied to ex-PGMA! Pati ba naman yang mga billboard ads eh iaasa pa natin sa nakaupong Presidente (regardless if it's PNoy, GMA or anybody)? Local executives and the MMDA could and should take care of that.
