A new partnership involving San Bernardino Employment and Training Agency (SBETA), SBVC, a new coalition of businesses, education institutions, and labor partners has been created to form a new proactive Water Recovery Program. This innovative Worker Recovery Program has established a Water Supply Technology career pathway for 10 outstanding students in the Water Supply Technology field. SBETA helps makes it possible for the students to pass their classes and complete training hours by providing $5,200 in paid work experience at the San Bernardino Water Department, to help with living expenses throughout the year. As a partner in the program, the Water Department provides the 10 students who are recommended by SBVC, with the required 2,080 hours of on-the-job training and experience. The program has resulted in a high percentage of students finding high-wage jobs in the region. Some students already working in the water field opted to come back each year to take classes that prepare them for licensing examinations to be used for career advancement within Water Departments. Others chose to complete the entire program continuously which takes most students about a year and a half to two years. Whichever route students choose to take, the Water Supply Technology program is representative of a new opportunity to partner with workforce training, education institutions and businesses to prepare people for local, high-wage jobs with growth opportunities. The Water Supply Technology program provides an excellent career opportunity in a field that is guaranteed to thrive. “Presently, nearly 50 percent of all employees in the Water Technology field are getting close to retirement” says Achala Chatterjee, Department Chair and Professor at SBVC. Once students receive one or more certifications in the program, they are able to seek jobs such as Plant Operator, Engineering Technician, Surface Water Manager, Environmental Lab Coordinator and Industrial Pre-Treatment Coordinator. “Entry level jobs typically start at $16 an hour, but have open opportunities to make upwards of $80,000 to $100,000 annually,” says Chatterjee.
