1A District Final: Mistakes hurt CC-E, fall to WBM 5-3
Clay Central-Everly beat West Bend-Mallard four times during the first two weeks of the season but the Wolverines saved its only win against the Mavericks for the district final.West Bend-Mallard (17-11) took advantage of eight walks and a couple costly errors to beat its Cornbelt Conference opponent Saturday night in Storm Lake, 5-3 to advance to the Class 1A Substate game versus Mason City Newman on Tuesday in Algona.
CC-E starter Caleb Batschelet struggled with his command throughout the night, giving up eight walks to just two hits and nine strikeouts in five innings of work. He took the loss after allowing five runs, all unearned.
"We made mistakes that we normally wouldn't make on most nights," CC-E coach Austin Davis said.
West Bend-Mallard scored four runs in the fourth to take control of the game with the help of three walks, two errors and a single. They added another run on an error in the fifth inning.
Offensively, CC-E totaled six hits, three by senior Caleb Mackey, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, run scored and RBI. Batschelet and Evan McCarty both doubled and Kyle Saboe singled. One Maverick rally was cut short in the fifth inning when Brock Breidinger was caught trying to tag up from second to third.
"We just couldn't find the big hits to bring in runners," Davis said. "We left nine runners on base and six in scoring position. West Bend-Mallard did what they needed to do to win the game. Their pitcher was able to keep us off balance and get timely outs."
CC-E played West Bend-Mallard in a doubleheader on June 1 and a doubleheader on June 6. CC-E outscored them 30-3 while winning all four games. Since the loss on June 6, West Bend-Mallard has gone 14-4, including winning 11 of its last 12. Davis said they are playing much better than when CC-E played them at the start of the season.
The Mavericks finished the season 22-9 and second in the Cornbelt Conference. They will graduate seven players, including Mackey, Batschelet, McCarty, Trevor Kunzmann, Nick Roghair, Mitch Fahnlander and AJ Schmidt.
"It's a tough way to end a very successful year," Davis, who finished his first season with CC-E, said. "The kids gave it their all the entire season. It's too bad the seniors had to go out like this after working so hard.

Storm Slashes Grass Lake - The Grass Lake Times
A Maple tree toppled by the wind gusts and rain that burst upon the Grass Lake area Monday, July 11 at noon, completely blocked Michigan Avenue near East cemetery. The old tree was one of many blown over, some causing power outages.
The storm had winds up to eighty miles an hour and lasted about ten minutes. At times the lashing rain was pelting horizontally, as the storm moved on, a welcome soft rain soaked the dry area with over a half inch of water.
Just north of Grass Lake, residents of FaHoLa camp and conference center lost power and had a number of trees down, some onto structures.
