UPDATE

The City of Mount Vernon Public Utilities Department has lifted the boil water notices that were issued yesterday afternoon for the 2900 and 3000 block of Brownsville Road, Bethel Road from Brownsville Road West, all of Reynolds Lane and the 2900 block of South 13 Street today.  This section of Perkins will be closed from 7 AM to 7 PM today.  Residents in that section need to have their vehicles moved to adjacent streets and motorists need to find an alternative route, use extreme caution if in the area and watch out for workers.

The city of Mount Vernon will have more streets oiled and chipped today from 7 AM to 5 PM, weather permitting.  The streets include 17 Street to Tolle Road and Whippoorwill Club from Miller Lane to the end.  Please use alternative routes while work in going on or if equipment is present.  Residents should park their vehicles on adjacent streets beginning at 7 AM in these areas until the process is complete.  If driving in these areas, watch for delays, stoppages and workers.  If you have any questions or concerns, call the public works department at 242-6853.

Sentencing for Kabria Cantley was handed down yesterday in Jefferson County Court.  Jefferson County State’s Attorney, Nicole Villani says Cantley received 4 years of probation and was fined $2,000, plus court costs.  In February of this year, Cantley was found guilty to Second Degree Murder, as she was tried for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend, 30-year old Bart Gladney, in the heart in March 2007 at their home as the result of a domestic disturbance.  Cantley claimed to suffer from Battered Women’s Syndrome and claimed that she used self defense.  Villani states that the sentencing involved many factors to be considered  with part of that being that the crime was a result of circumstances and not likely to recur and the defendant had no criminal history.

Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones has announced a third arrest in connection to the burglary at the Gibby’s on the Green Restaurant at the Rend Lake Golf Course.  Jones says that on Tuesday night John D. Williams, 20, of Benton was arrested and charged with Burglary, Felony Theft and Criminal Damage to Property.  Gibby’s was robbed early Sunday morning and a safe was found to be stolen, but has been recovered.  19-year olds Levi Duigood of Christopher and Jacob Lampley of Benton were arrested shortly afterwards.  Both were charged with Felony Theft and Criminal Damage to Property, but Duigood was also charged with Burglary.  Lampley has since bailed out, while Duigood and Williams both remain in the Franklin County Jail on $20,000 bond.
