City hall selling Guelph abroad
GUELPH — Some travelling salespeople sell vacuum cleaners. Others hawk life insurance. Jim Mairs sells the City of Guelph. A 28-year veteran of the city’s economic development department who specializes in advanced manufacturing, Mairs is one of two city staffers charged with luring corporations to Guelph and convincing them to stay here.
This year, he’s travelled farther afield than ever before — to Phoenix, Anaheim and Munich — representing Guelph for the Ontario Clean Technology Alliance, a province-led effort to promote southwestern Ontario as a cleantech hub.
The approach is working, Mairs said during an interview at City Hall this week, citing three cleantech firms about to relocate or add an office here.
As for the dozens of other company representatives he’s met at trade shows this year, “at least they can say, ‘If we’re thinking of doing something in Ontario, we’ve got a contact, we’ve got a face,’” Mairs said.
Another Guelph business development specialist, Barbara Maly, has been conducting similar ambassadorship to attract agriculture, food processing and biotechnology companies to the city.
Maly recently represented the two-year-old Grow Guelph initiative, a partnership with the University of Guelph, at a food expo in New Orleans and the World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing in Toronto. Grow Guelph also represents the city in the newly created Ontario Food Cluster.
In an interview, Maly said more investment by food companies will mean more jobs, lower taxes and increased quality of life through corporate donations and sponsorships.
Three major food companies have recently expressed interest in moving to or expanding within Guelph, she said.
“This sector is recession-proof,” Maly said, referring to the agri-food industry. “Everyone needs to eat.”
Cleantech and agri-food are identified as priority sectors in Prosperity 2020, the department of economic development and tourism’s guiding document.
Mairs said that compared to other jurisdictions in the Ontario cleantech alliance such as Toronto, Waterloo Region, Hamilton and Windsor-Essex, Guelph has a lot to offer, including 500 acres of graded commercial land, a large pool of skilled manufacturing labour and a municipality with a stated commitment to alternative energy.
“Different communities have different strengths,” he said, adding that all 10 partners in the alliance have as additional selling points Ontario’s low corporate tax rates, high feed-in tariff rates and proximity to lucrative U.S. markets.

“What we're after is the supply chain side of it,” he said, noting the city is courting a manufacturer of parts for the wind turbine nacelle, the oblong piece behind the nose of the propeller that houses the gearbox and alternator.

The gearbox is itself one of the smoothest around, but finding neutral occasionally takes a bit too much effort. Of particular note is how the bike doesn't show any jerkiness even when suddenly snapping open the throttle. Refinement on this bike is of

Horton and Hub City introduce mechanically driven variable-speed ...
Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN-WI (1888PressRelease) November 24, 2009 - Horton, Inc., in conjunction with Hub City, Inc., has introduced a mechanically driven variable-speed fan drive system with gearbox for more efficient cooling of rear-engine buses, motor homes and motor coaches with side-mounted cooling modules. The system includes the Horton VMaster® or Stratis Viscous Fan Drive, WindMaster® or WindShift Fan, Di Controller and Hub City Right-Angle Gearbox. The Horton and Hub City variable-speed fan drive system is maintenance-free, reduces noise, saves fuel and increases available horsepower for auxiliary components. The 12-/24-volt fan drive and controller feature integral diagnostics and customized algorithms for specific requirements and are J1939 compatible for plug-and-play operation. The fan drive and controller have a 105 degree C temperature rating and are compatible with a wide range of fan sizes. WindMaster and WindShift Fans feature computer-optimized blade design; fan diameters ranging from 16 to 48 inches (400 to 1219 mm); configurations with 6, 7, 8, 9 11, 12 and 13 blades; and standard pilots ranging from less than 1 inch to 7 inches (25 to 180 mm). Horton offers assistance to OEMs for fan airflow and fan performance testing to optimize engine cooling. Gear drives from Hub City feature robust high-alloy gray iron housing and closures for rigid gear and bearing support; high-capacity spiral bevel gears; precision-tapered roller or ball bearings with high-quality automotive grade seals; alloy steel nitrided shafting for improved wear; lubrication level monitoring devices, magnetic drain plug; and extended pinion housings to replace sheave bearing block and drive shaft systems for cost savings. Hub City, Inc., based in Aberdeen, S.D., provides power transmission products for use in recreation, transportation, military, packaging, construction, communication, materials handling, medical and food processing equipment.
