With enrollment up, BC explores new on-campus living options
“Student enrollment at Bluefield College is on the rise, thanks to the addition of new programs and services, like football, that are attracting more students to BC,” Olive said. “In fact, last fall the college enrolled its largest number of traditional students since 2004. In addition to the record number of traditional students enrolled, Bluefield College is celebrating its largest resident population ever. Demand for on-campus living is higher than ever, even with current students, because of the significant improvements in the residential and student activity facilities on campus.” The Bluefield College Board of Trustees created a Residence Hall Task Force last fall to work with administration on determining the feasibility of creating more on-campus residences. With the study’s conclusion, the task force recommended additional analysis including exploration into construction modern townhouse structures rather than more traditional dormitory facilities. “Typically, the process is driven by the demand for on-campus housing,” Olive said. “When the administration anticipates a need for additional housing for students, they alert the Board of Trustees, who then gives the administration the authority to explore options to increase residential space. In this particular case, the Board created a Residence Hall Task Force that has been studying options to expand residence facilities since the fall of 2010. Most recently, the Task Force requested proposals for architectural services. The group is reviewing those proposals now. Next, the Task Force will recommend and the administration will select an architectural firm to design the project and determine a project cost estimate. “Even after the construction of East River Hall just two years ago, our current resident census reflects that residential capacity is nearing its maximum again,” Olive said. “With additional enrollment and residential growth anticipated, our Board of Trustees has discussed planning for a new residence hall and acknowledges that certain preliminary tasks must be completed in order to facilitate preparation.” “Bluefield College’s resident population has increased from 160 students in 2007 to 280 this past fall,” he said. “In fact, we anticipate resident numbers increasing to a record 320 students this fall.College Student Enrollment - News
