Kids lend helping hand to storm victims
With so many people in Knox County coping with storm damage, good samaritans are stepping up.
A group of kids from Buffett Heights Baptist Church in Knoxville surprised a family with a helping hand.
The Sherlin family was facing a daunting job, after Tuesday's storms littered their North Knoxville home with trees and limbs.
"It just twisted all the trees out and dropped them in the back of the house," said Rick Sherlin, the affected homeowner.
But Wednesday night, they got the help they needed without even asking.
"I just came home and I had a yard full of people pulling limbs and everything to the street!" he said.
The Sherlin's estimate it would have taken a month to clean up their yard by themselves. The Buffet Heights group accomplished much of the work in just a few hours.
"After the storms, we thought it would be a good project for us to just drive around until we found somebody who needed help and work with them," said Pastor Dave Thomas.
The group of kids of all ages, along with adult chaperones, take time every Wednesday in the summer to help out their community.
"As a church we feel like we're called to serve the neighborhood community and surrounding counties. So that's just what we do," said youth member Nathan Branchit.
Branchit said the spiritual calling isn't the only reason he volunteers his time.
"To help somebody out just makes you feel good," Branchit said.
You couldn't find more gracious recipients.
"It's a blessing. God sent them all over here to help us and we appreciate it so much," said Sherlin.

Police: Drunken man arrested at sheriff's church | The Associated ...
Authorities in Tennessee say a drunken man was arrested after wandering into a church where the sheriff had been worshipping.
Sheriff David Andrews said 42-year-old Gregory Blaine Wade of Cookeville showed up Wednesday at the Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ just as a service was ending.
According to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, an arrest report said Wade became argumentative, was unsteady and had a 40-ounce bottle of beer in his backpack. He was charged with public intoxication.
A spokeswoman at the Putnam County Jail said Monday that Wade was sentenced to 10 days in jail. He remains behind bars. There was no record that he has an attorney.
