Star-studded lineup at Western Film Fair

XX The Western Film Fair, a 33-year love affair, may well hit its high-water mark in year 34. Not only has the three-day festival lured what could be argued is its finest lineup of stars, it is moving from the Clarion Sundance Plaza Hotel in Winston-Salem to the LJVM Coliseum.
XX This year's festival will take place July 20-23 and, as always, will feature classic Western films, guest panels, musical entertainment and a banquet, culminating since 1994 in the presentation of the Ernest Tubb Memorial Award. A shuttle service will take guests and out-of-town attendees from the Clarion to the Coliseum.
XX Typically, since moving from Charlotte to Winston-Salem in 2008, the event has drawn between 300 and 400 patrons, but this year it may be bigger.
XX “I wouldn't be surprised if we drew over 500,” said one of the organizers, Jerry Campbell, a retired Jamestown native and part-time Western swing musician and songwriter. “Based on this lineup, plus the fact it moved to a larger room in LJVM, we may even hit 600.” XX A glimpse at the roster confirms his rosy outlook. It includes not only names only Western buffs would recognize but some household names as well. Heading the list is Shirley Jones, best known as the star of the long-running TV hit “The Partridge Family,” who has a huge list of movie credits as well, including “Oklahoma,” “Carousel,” “The Music Man” and “Elmer Gantry,” for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1960.
XX Equally well-known is Connie Stevens, the multi-talented actress and singer who appeared in dozens of movies, TV shows and Broadway plays as well as being a Las Vegas headliner. She also recorded two Top 10 Billboard hit songs and was a regular on many of Bob Hope's USO tours. She was married briefly to singer Eddie Fisher, and her daughter is actress Joely Fisher.
XX Another much-loved TV star on the bill is Dan Haggerty, remembered most for his role as Grizzly Adams on the hit TV show of the same name as well as three spin-off movies.
XX Western buffs know Deanna Lund for her starring role in “Laredo,” but the general public would recognize her as a regular on the soap operas “One Life To Live” and “General Hospital” and as a star on the TV series “Land of the Giants.”
XX Julie Adams has over 50 TV and 100 movie credits.

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story Video

On or around January 5th 1964, Stewart was drunk and waiting on the Twickenham railway station platform, playing "Smokestack Lightnin'" on his harmonica. Long John Baldry heard him and invited him to sit in with his group. Stewart gradually overcame his shyness and was sometimes added to the billing as "Rod the Mod" Stewart, the nickname coming from his dandyish style of grooming and dress. He appeared on several regional television shows around the country and recorded his first single in 1964. Stewart insisted that the session musicians he was given, including John Paul Jones, learn a couple of Sonny Boy Williamson songs he had just heard. The resulting single, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", was recorded and released in October 1964. Stewart played some dates on his own in late 1964 and early 1965, sometimes backed by the Southampton R & B outfit The Soul Agents. Baldry and Stewart put together Steampacket, with Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll. Their first appearance was in support of The Rolling Stones in July 1965. Stewart's "Rod the Mod" image gained wider visibility in 1965, when he was the subject of a 30-minute London television documentary titled "An Easter with Rod" that portrayed the Mod scene. His parallel solo career attempts continued on EMI's Columbia label with the November 1965 release of "The Day Will Come", a more heavily arranged pop attempt, and the April 1966 release of his take on Sam Cooke's "Shake", with the Brian Auger Trinity.
