Posing as a Poet for the Sake of a Child's Education
A repellent comedy that’s less fun than a parasite infection, “The Best and the Brightest” plays like a television pilot written by sexually frustrated frat boys. Top-heavy with seasoned talent (including Neil Patrick Harris and Christopher McDonald) and bottom-loaded with bile, this skewering of wealthy Manhattanites puts more energy into demeaning women than into sustaining a narrative.
What little story there is concerns Jeff (Mr. Harris), a mild-mannered computer programmer, and his bordering-on-insane wife, Samantha (Bonnie Somerville). Desiring “one more shot at the dream,” Samantha bullies her spouse and 5-year-old daughter into relocating from Delaware to New York City. Her dream, however, remains unexplained — all Samantha seems to want is a more exciting husband.
In short order, the couple learns that admission to a private kindergarten requires that applicants be in utero and that parents be something other than hicks. Cue a screenplay (by the director, Josh Shelov, and Michael Jaeger) bursting with over-the-top caricatures, including a wacky admissions coach ( Amy Sedaris ), resplendent in hillbilly rompers, who advises Jeff to masquerade as a poet at a long-shot school interview. When a friend’s pornographic e-mails are mistaken for Jeff’s poetry, the high jinks are afoot.
Fixated on the conjunction of wealth and depravity (because watching upper-crust ladies swoon before the power of spoken-word filth is just hilarious), “The Best and the Brightest” cares less about kindergartners than about adults who act like them. If you are going to be this mean-spirited, you had better deliver the jokes, but the film’s attacks on pretentious parents — not to mention put-downs of hardworking immigrants — consistently come off as more hateful than humorous.
Wisely, Mr. Harris tries his best to hide behind the furniture, but he can’t conceal a nastiness that, like the libido of a character called the Player, doesn’t know when to quit.

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the passage of the Marriage Equality Act, granting same-sex couples the freedom to marry under the law, as well as hundreds of rights, benefits, and protections that have been limited to married couples of the opposite sex. Governor Cuomo signed the Act into law at 11:55pm on June 24, 2011. Congratulations New York! Congratulations everyone! Congratulations and thank you Governor Cuomo. Maybe this will perk up our Rhode Island representatives to watch and learn.
