Southside Community Land Trust Turns Thirty
Though the afternoon was hot and hazy, over 125 people came to the Urban Edge Farm in Cranston to celebrate the 30th birthday of the Southside Community Land Trust, its success over the last thirty years and the fact that the organization continues to grow.
The event featured family-friendly activities such as face painting, hay rides, caricature portraits, and sack races. Dozens of families gathered under a large white tent to cool off from the blistering sun and enjoy the music of Grammy-Award winner Bill Harley.
Katherine Brown, Executive Director of the Southside Community Land Trust, said she was thrilled with the outcome of the event and the continued growth of the organization, the roots of which first took root in 1981, she said.
“The idea was a partnership between people who had recently arrived from Southeast Asia and recent Brown University graduates taking advantage of the blight that had happened in the Southside of Providence," Brown said.
The result were transformed vacant lots in the city into that became prolific gardens and farms. The Urban Edge Farm, the organization’s largest farm, is a result of collaboration between the Department of Environmental Management, the City of Cranston, the Champlain Foundation, and seven dedicated farmers who share the load of irrigation, mowing, and other aspects of the operation.
As the organization moves forward, Brown described a three year strategic plan to expand the capacity of the organization in order to meet the growing need.
“More people want to grow their own food for various reasons and we’re trying to respond to the need," she said.
The plan has been launched citywide in Providence, consisting of 800 families and 30 to 40 gardens. The organization plans to create seven new gardens per year.
Among the supporters attending the event were Libby Edgerly and Linda Dewing Edgerly said she had been connected to the organization from the beginning and praised its positive impact on the state.
“Rhode Island has been on the cutting edge of [the local foods movement] for a long time," she said. In particular, she cited the Southside Community Land Trust’s involvement in the public school systems and integrating its core ideas into after-school curricula.
One of the seven farmers at Urban Edge Farm, Christina Dedora said, “The event is really fun. It’s a good opportunity for people to visit the farm and see what we do here.
