Traffic Talk: Study on phone use while driving proves interesting, inconclusive

Legislation.

What's a bit confusing is that the study has some contradiction. It reports that drivers are distracted as much as half of the time they spend behind the wheel by many factors, from eating to talking to texting. But it says drivers adapt by paying more attention to driving when road risk levels increase.

And, it recommends states enforce existing distracted driving laws, but should consider that such enforcement takes away from other traffic enforcement efforts.

Are we undecided? Well, yes and no.

The study does document the extent of use of cellphones and texting among American drivers. These findings are worth a hard look, and here's why.

Two-thirds of all motorists were found to have used a cellphone while driving, about a third of them routinely, and an eighth of all drivers reported texting while driving. Two years ago, observational studies (during daylight hours) found only 1 percent of all drivers were texting.

The study came up with recommendations such as enacting a total ban of cellphone use for young or new drivers, as well as texting bans for all drivers. It also supports rumble strips and “automotive technological innovations” to reduce distracted driving accidents.

Those aren't well defined.

By the way ...

It's interesting to note that the study, like the arguments between those on either side of the cellphone/texting issues, goes back and forth. Again, it will be up to each state to decide.

But as long as drivers drift across the centerline, sit through light changes, fail to maintain proper speed, or don't pay attention to their driving because they're looking at a text message, we have a concern.

Enjoy your week and drive safely.
